Surreal Self-Portraiture of Kyle Thompson

 Chicago-based photographer Kyle Thompson wowed us with his surreal self-portraits nine months ago and he hasn’t quit churning out striking photos yet. 
Thompson continues to play with the elements–submerging himself in lakes and muddy puddles, exposing random limbs poking out from the earth, and setting himself on fire. His images have a beautiful sense of movement to them, especially in the recurring presentation of the fluidity of windswept fabric, which often complements his serene expression. Many of the photographer’s images alternate between presenting a visual interpretation of inhaling a breath of fresh air and being suffocated by some unnatural force.  Russian photographer Margarita Kareva is both the subject and author of a fairy tale. Just three short years into her photography career, and she has already carved out a niche – as well as an ever-expanding fan base – in the world of fantasy photography.

Specializing in images that beautifully transform her female subjects into princesses and witches alike, there is a definitive fairytale feel in each portrait. Some are based on specific, well-known stories, but all are inspired by her love of fantasy books.
Combining real props and costumes with digital manipulations and other surreal elements, Margarita Kareva captures the wonder and imagination children feel growing up with magical characters and locations, bewitching us with her technical and creative capacities.

Enchanting Book Sculptures Inspired by Fairy Tales by Su Blackwell

Su Blackwell, an English artist, imagines these poetic and meticulous book sculptures, inspired by folkloric books and fairy tales, which enchant our imagination and wake our child’s soul. She explains : “I began to make a series of sculptures, cutting-out images from old books to create three-dimensional diorama’s, and displaying them inside wooden boxes.” Her artworks are so fragile that they seem almost ephemeral.
Details are impressive ; the more you look, the more you discover little things, invisible at first sight. Enchanted forests, charming houses, boats by moonlight, a universe directly inspired by her childhood, which she spent in the middle of trees, to write stories or to read.
