Imaginative Insects Formed From Resin and Brass by Hiroshi Shinno

Hiroshi Shinno is a Japanese artist passionate about animals and insects of all kinds. In his latest series, the artist constructed imaginative insect species from resin and acrylic paints. But the artist wanted to give this construction another aspect, giving the impression that his achievements were made with leaves and petals of flowers. On his site, the artist of Kyoto keeps a journal of insects on which he reveals the sketches of his ideas of insects.

Bugs Get Bejeweled into Crystal Critters by Tyler Thrashe

Forget taxidermy—encrusting animal remains with crystals is the new best way to send your pets onto their next lives. Caver and wilderness man Tyler Thrasher began collecting cicadas and animal bones from long hikes and combining them with the mineral formations that enthralled him while exploring underground caves. “I coupled that with my understanding of chemistry and chemical principles and combined the two,” Thrasher tells The Creators Project. “I decided to put an alchemical narrative behind my work, using cicada shells and remains to reference transformation, and skulls as momento mori—a stark reminder of our mortality and the alchemist’s pursuit to subdue it.”

A surprising and psychedelic discovery by Mattia Menchetti, a biology student at the University of Florence, who created an experiment providing different colors of paper to a captive colony of European wasps. If these rainbow wasp nests are pretty amusing, they unfortunately demonstrate how unintentional human interference can also produce surprising and dramatic results.

Each year when summer comes along, we all look forward to different things. Some of us head to the beach, others to the mountains for camping. Some look forward to the epicurean delights like watermelon and ice cones. But for a select group of photographers in Japan, Summer signals the arrival of fireflies. And for very short periods – typically May and June, from around 7 to 9pm – these photographers set off to secret locations all around Japan, hoping to capture the magical insects that light up the night.
