Even though these photographs look like
pieces from a surreal art series, they are real photo portraits of the
marvelous Siamese fighting fish, taken by passionate Bankok-based
photographer and fish enthusiast Visarute Angkatavanich.
The Siamese fighting fish, also known as
betta (Betta splendens), is native to the Mekong basin of Thailand,
Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. They are popular as aquarium fish for their
breathtaking beauty, despite their famously aggressive nature. No
wonder, then, that Angkatavanich was hooked on photographing them since
the very first time he encountered them at a fish show three years ago,
as he told Popular Photography. The fishes in his hypnotizing
photographs look like they’re suspended in the air rather than swimming
in water thanks to the sleek and elegant look of the perfectly black
background.
